Inspiration

Design process

For this project, I started my design process by pulling out the most important elements of the story - the cornspike (in a form of a plant that inspired the main character's name), the angelica plant in different stages of its growth, and the moon - which was always used as a background to describe the plant.

I experimented with placing my elements in different coordinations to figure out which placement would be the best at conveying the mood and message of the story.

Final pattern design

My final pattern design features the transformation of the angelica plant, as well as intertwined angelica plant and cornspike as a reference to the night they spend together. The moon in the back refers to how the angelica plant was usually described at night, against the moonlight. Falling seeds and flowers are a reference to how the character of Cornspike pulled out the seeds of the angelica plant at the end of the story.

I decided to create this pattern in two colour options: lighter and darker, in the same way as depending on the phase of the moon, the colour of the sky at night differs

Pattern application for products

I designed this pattern with the idea to apply it on textiles for a summer womenswear collection. The target group for that collection would be women aged 30-40 and ideally the collection would reflect the spirit of the story of Cornspike. As an example to showcase the pattern design on a product, I designed and created a 3d model of a light, summer dress.
