Aim

This project aims to question toxic beauty culture and its unrealistic standards, which can lead to negative body image, unhealthy behaviors, and physical harm from cosmetic procedures. Toxic beauty culture is often perpetuated by media, advertising, and other cultural institutions. We can challenge and disrupt this toxic culture by promoting body positivity, self-acceptance, and healthy behaviors. Consumers can play a role by supporting inclusive and diverse beauty standards and making informed choices about the products and messages they consume. Together, we can create a culture that values diversity and self-acceptance rather than harmful beauty standards.

Ideation

At the start of the project, we considered the ways in which humans suffer, including anxieties, fears, and stresses. Through group ideation exercises, we explored different ways to increase suffering. We then moved on to individual ideas. My first idea was for a retreat center called „DieWell“ that helps adults prepare for death. Regardless of age, individuals could come to DieWell to experience being beautiful and skinny before they die, following beauty standards set by experts. The focus of the project was on the negative impact of toxic beauty culture on body image, particularly for young generations. However, the idea evolved into the „Genex Lab“ to focus more on the negative impact of beauty standards on physical and mental health.
