A2 HANDSFREE DOOR OPENER STACKFLETH/ MÜLLER

A2 HANDSFREE DOOR OPENER STACKFLETH/ MÜLLER

The task was to design and produce a hands free door opener with an internal diameter of 20mm to fit on round door handles.

1ST PROTOTYPE

When we started to develop our door opener we wanted it to be practical and usable by everyone. We deliberately decided against designing an object that you carry around in your pocket and always have to „took out“ to open a door. Therefore we wanted to design a door opener that is firmly mounted on the door.

We decided that we wanted to design an opener that could be operated with the forearm, so it would theoretically be possible to have both hands occupied or carry something in both hands and still open the door.

2ND PROTOTYPE

First of all we designed the lower part of the opener/ holder for the tube in rhino.

The installation should be fixed by screwing it to the door handle, so that the construction can withstand firmer/ stronger pressure.

During the development of our first cardboard model/ prototype, we realized that a simple arm case would not be sufficient, as the height of the door handle is extremely impractical to operate with the forearm. We therefore decided to fix the upper part of the door opener (arm case) to a kind of rod to achieve the desired, comfortable height.

3RD PROTOTYPE

The focus for the forearm case was for us on the ergonomic form. The case is also slightly angled to allow a better, easier and more comfortable use.

To increase the grip and to use less material we chose the honeycomb structure of the door opener.

For the connecting piece between the „armcase“ and the fastening we organised an iron tube from the metal workshop and had a kind of recess sawed into both ends of the tube so the tube could be firmly anchored in the two pieces of the door opener.

The whole project was for us under the motto to construct an overall organic form which is comfortable, pleasant and easy to use for everyone.

Also you don't have to think about another „tool“ before you leave the house to protect yourself from the corona virus- you can simply use our self-explanatory hands free door opener which is already mounted.

4TH FINAL VERSION

After the first printing of our prototype we updated the fastening part of our door handle. We made it a bit thicker and way more wider to withstand more pressure.

Also we have made the edges of the forearm case on the right and left wider and flatter so the 3d printer can print our model more easily and without any bugs.
