„You will design an instructional poster within two weeks. This one will show how to perform an (apparently) simple activity, like showering, preparing a coffee, rolling a cigarette, etc.“
This was the project description and this is my execution:
provide a set of logical instructions on how to do something
show it in simple „1, 2, 3, ...“-process steps
and now ... let's go!
In the first step I thought about what I could make a manual for. What am I interested in? What would I personally need a manual for?
A few ideas came together:
All ideas have something to do with me and my interests.
When I went through the ideas again, it quickly became clear to me which ideas I would like to implement more and which ones I would like to implement less.
I started but still made a small sketch for each idea to see how feasible each of them is:
a) how to techno
b) how to corona test
c) how to wrap a gift
d) how to punch needle
e) how to use an analog camera
After this step I was able to clearly sort out and decide.
I decided on the following three ideas and developed them further. I tried to find a suitable style for each idea. I also experimented a little with the arrangement and colors and spun the ideas a little further.
Corona Test
Techno
My first thought was to make a tutorial on how to dance to techno. But then I was told to think bigger. So to make a guide for the complete world of techno, from clothes to drugs (which cliché-like just belong to it) and a typical procedure of a raver's weekend. I have helped myself to clichés.
Gift
Here I tried a little with the arrangement and with different color compositions.
As you can see, I pursued two of three ideas more intensively. The gift wrapping idea and the techno one.
I didn't pursue the idea of instructions for a corona test because it was too „boring“ and mundane for me. I was able to work on the other two ideas with more fun.
I developed new characters. In the process, I realized once again how much time you need for illustrations.
Small drawings for the individual steps in the process.
I also tried a layout with the existing drawings to see how it would look when it was finished.
Originally, the idea is based only on the conventional (in Germany) way to wrap a gift.
But maybe it would be much more interesting to introduce a new way of gift wrapping.
A way to wrap a gift without tape. And I decided to present the Japanese gift wrapping technique.
For this I first had to do a little research and test and practice this way myself.

sketches
In the end, due to lack of time, I decided to implement only one of the two ideas. This decision was almost self-evident, the illustrations for the gift wrapping instructions were already more mature than those for the techno procedure.
So I continued to work on the manual for gift wrapping. (but I didn't put the idea of the techno procedure completely aside).
Now it was time to completely implement the idea, finish illustrating it and put it into a layout.
layout
I tried a few different arrangements but it leaned towards the final layout pretty quickly.
The poster „japanese gift wrapping technique“ should be sponsored by a brand, this still had to be developed and a logo should be created.
I decided that it should be a stationery store or an artist supply or creative market or something like that.
Name
When coming up with a name, I immediately thought of something very simple.
Something catchy and very appropriate.
papier
paper
stift
…
Logodesign
I also wanted to work very simply when developing the logo.
It should become a font logo.
Here are a few sketches:
In the end, I decided on this logo:
And here is the final poster:
I am very grateful for the great short project and am happy with what came out of it.
