Yin-Yan

A week long intensive design exercise which pushed our limits as Designers and enabled us to integrated furniture design with realms of parametrics. The material also played an important role - cardboard being a lightweight material allowed us to design create bulky, interesting and complicated forms. These forms were then constructed using the waffle method in rhinoceros and grasshopper.

Project and process

We learnt about the softwares, basics of furniture design, work with laser cuts, about different materials while prototyping and a lot about time management. We wanted to create a furniture piece which goes beyond basic definition of traditional furniture design and explore realms of how furniture can also be an minimal art piece sitting quitely in the corner of a room when not in use and express complicated yet elegant form when in use. The idea was also to create this feeling of surprise for the user (or Guest) who sees a simple form from when the furniture piece is stacked together but goes in this awe of appreciation when sees the hidden parametric form. We designed a set of two sitting stools we can be used in multiple ways and orientations depending on mood and requirement of the user. We started with a simple form of cube when stacked together and tried carving out mirrored seating forms inside which further down the process developed in a cylinder adn finally became a sphere for it to look elegant and enable it to be used from different sides.
