OLIVIA (EXP I: Translation from text to sound)

Exp 1 — Translation [From Text to Sound] Professor: Severin Wucher

In this expertise module, I learned to translate from one system to another, specifically from an extract in „The Invisible Cities“ by Italo Calvino all the way to sound.

Into a Text Poster

Task 1 was to translate this given text into a text poster, where we simply focused on only its syntax and structure. I chose to divide the text into three separate categories using colors: descriptive/setting, point of view/perspective that sets the tone, and statement of personal opinion. This is mainly because the author likes to be very descriptive in his writing and always begin each paragraph with a perspective that sets the tone for each of them. Moreover, I have also structured it using line breaks based on how one would usually read the extract as it indicates the pauses in between.

Into a Typographic Image

Task 2 was to translate the given text into a typographic image, where we focused on its meaning/semantics. Here, I designed the poster based on the line, „If there really were an Olivia of mullioned windows and peacocks, of saddlers and rug weavers, and canoes and estuaries, it would be a wretched, black, fly-riddin hole,“ because it best summarises the whole extract in one phrase. I came up with a few variations, playing with the name Olivia and the letter „O“ as the hole. Eventually, I settled on one of the final designs, where I turned the letters into these flies that are coming out of a hole.

Into a Video

Task 3 was to translate this typographic image into a video, where we focused on its developments and dynamics. Due to my lack of experience and knowledge in video softwares, I created a simple animation using Key Note. Here, you can see all these flies rushing out from the hole and then falling back into it. Into a Sound

Task 4 was to translate the given text into a sound, where we focused on emotion/immersion. Due to my lack of experience and knowledge in sound production, I put together a soundtrack using Garageband with my own recorded footages. (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM1-V_4_opw))
