A collection of stories from greek mythology taking place on the island of Crete.
As someone who has always been a fan of Greek mythology, I of course had to chose this as my topic for this class. I collected my favourite myths and discovered that they were all somehow connected with each other, so I decided to put them into one big story.
Because I wanted the story to be more than simply showing the myths and their content I decided to change the perspective by using a different narrator. For the narrator I chose to let a character from the story tell it from his own perspective. Said character is Daedalus, father of Icarus, who tells the story as a kind of flashback after his son died.
I took inspiration from ancient Greek art, especially vases, to develop the style of my illustrations. After defining which plot points I want to illustrate, I started drawing them in Procreate and later on vectorized them in Illustrator for higher quality.
Within the story Daedalus creates three very important inventions that always result into a turning point of the story. I wanted to include his inventions as objects. One is the map of the maze, where the minotaur is trapped inside, the second one is a piece of red yarn for Ariadne and the last one is a feather for Icarus.
For the layout I chose to go for a leporello to kind of resemble ancient paper scrolls in a more compact format and therefore created a vertical layout. I looked for typefaces that fit the topic very well and put everything together.
