In this class we developed different design solutions for ME- ourselves, YOU- a person we are close to, WE- a group of people we are part of and for THEM- a group of people we do not share the same values with.
In view of the first aspect „WE“ everybody had to do a personality test. Afterwards we were asked to select one feature in which we reached an extremely high or low score. I chose wisdom. In the following we built mind maps in groups of two to brainstorm.
Afterwards, we were asked to think about how we could get better in our specific topic in only one week. I came up with the idea of reading the newspaper in order to get to know different mindsets, understand them and build my own opinion on them. I also looked up topics which i found in the newspaper which drew my interest. This is how I became a little bit wiser in one week. I drew a little instruction on how to do it. (I also tried to follow a german saying „Die Weisheit mit Löffeln fressen“ -To eat wisdom with a big spoon)
Next up, we searched for one person we are close to. We had to take 12-15 fotos of the home the person lives in. In the best case it should have been detail shots. I chose my mother.
The next time we discussed the photos in teams and searched for the key problem this person has. In my case it was a space problem. The person owns so many books and the bookshelf ist too small for all of them. After an interview i got to know that she knows about the problem but it is quite easy to ignore it. And on the other hand books full of knowledge are worthy objects. You should not throw them away. We should also show potential opportunities. Here it is the opportunity to lend some books to other people and share the knowledge which you find inside. You can also give some of them away and make others happy.
We also worked with frameworks to identify needs and create theories. In my case the most surprising aspect was that the person knew the problem and she did not do anything against it. It was interesting to see that there was a slight bit of fear of loosing the books. You always tend to think you could need the thing one day even if you did not use it for a long while. A main point was the fear of memory loss. In the end i created an own framework in shape of a line of clothes. In my model you see the problem but also fear and lazyness and excuses. In the end you get standstill.
Under the task of „WE“ I chose my friends who tend to spend too much money on useless things they do not really need. A wallet came to my mind which had teeth to bite the owner who tries to reach the coins and also a matryoshka. There should be several closures which take a lot of time to reach your money. In this time the owner would have time to overthink the buying decision. And the person would also overthink if the object is worth the work to unpack your wallet.
I also built a prototype.
As my „THEM“ I chose football fans on the train. Under the headline „REdesign of the footballfans on the train experience“ I asked some questions. I wanted to know who is affected by it. These where the trainmanagers, the DB Group, Abellio and people who use the train.
As an extreme user I planned to interview staff from the train. I asked a woman at the info point who told me that she would likely not answer my question. In the following I interviewed Ha My who also was on a train with football fans in the past. She told me that they are often very emotional and tend to destroy things.
The travellers on the train need safety and silence and they feel distracted or are afraid of the football fans.
It would be a gamechanger if the fans would get an extra wagon each for one team in which they could let their emotions be free. A rubber wagon came to my mind. This wagon would be painted in relaxing colours and there would be relaxing music. I also thought of walls to paint which would be easy to clean afterwards. That´s how they could express their emotions. The bin would be a basketball hoop. The interieur would be non-destroyable and soft so nobody would be hurt.
Through an yes and and yes but session I also came up with an area for the drunk people like a „Gummizelle“ so they would not be a danger to other ones and there is also security available who checks if there are only fans of the right club in the wagon.
Thobuca- Thought Bubble Card
Finally I decided to extend the idea of the Mindful Decision Wallet. I made one from modelling clay. I decided against the idea of a wallet. It seemed to be too annoying if you only want to get some food in the supermarket and have to unwrap your wallet for several minutes. That´s why I came up with the idea of a gift. It should be a gift from friends for friends to make them rethink their decisions. The material is what makes this piece unique. I planned to use porcelain. The wallet would come in a DIY-set in parts. The person who wants to make the gift can place money in between the two halves of porcelain and will glue them together afterwards. If the presentee wants to reach the money it has to break the wallet. The wallet will come in cool designs and look very pretty. That´s why you will overthink if you really want to destroy the piece for the item you plan to buy. The person will make at least once a considered decision and will start to reconsider their buying behaviour. Therefore I also changed the name of the product into Thobuca- Thought Bubble Card. The porcelain wallet will have the shape and size of a credit card and will fit in every bag.
