One Rainy Day

A soulmate is a person with whom one has a feeling of calm and inner freedom. You don’t need to speak with him in words, soulmate reads everything in your eyes and gestures. At a glance, he can guess the weather of your heart. Sometimes he knows you better than you know yourself...

About the story

This story is about two soulmates who meet each other on a rainy day. The story starts with two beginnings and shows how one meeting, as if long-planned by someone, helps to change the lives of two lonely souls forever, forever connecting them with a red thread.

Main task

This project was created as part of an elective module - Experimental Storytelling. The main objective of the course was to develop new ways of telling stories. I chose graphics and storytelling through a book because it is this format that gives ground for experimentation. I decided to abandon the text on the pages, because the illustrations can tell a story without words.

Story

A created story is a story written by me from scratch. I have always been inspired to watch the behavior of animals and birds. Therefore, it seemed interesting to me to tell the story from the point of view of a lonely bird, which does not despair and is not disappointed in the idea of making friends.

In this story, a lonely bird, not accepted by other birds and people, is trying to find its place in this world and its family. We can see how a bird, having found a piece of nachos for breakfast, does not decide to eat it whole, but tries to share it with everyone it meets. Unfortunately, no one is willing to accept such a gift. Due to its small and undeveloped wings, the bird can not fly. Thus, it is not recognized among other birds, and people are simply frightened by their features. In the course of the story, on one of the grayest and rainiest days, a hero appears, as lonely as a bird, who becomes a true friend for him. He teaches the bird to fly, and makes her prosthetic wings, thereby giving the bird a new life.

It would seem that this is a happy ending? However, no. This is only the middle of the story. From the middle of the book, the story begins to go in the opposite direction, but already on behalf of a man. We see his path to this happiest state, we see all the difficulties that led him to this bird and subsequently a happy life with a new friend.

Style and Technique

I have considered a huge number of graphic styles.

For more emotional storytelling, it was decided to depict everything in black and white, with the addition of red. In an experimental way, I decided to draw everything using only one watercolor black pencil. This limits, but at the same time opens up scope for the imagination. So, I found a way to draw with it, after wetting it with water and print large spots with a wet napkin with a pencil lead applied to it. Thus, the image is somewhat planned and interesting.

Storyboard

Next, I developed a storyboard in which I showed all the main events of the story in sketches. The storyboard gave birth to the idea to create a story, a story with two beginnings and only one end.

Illustrations

The illustrations were done with a black watercolor pencil. Subsequently, the illustrations were scanned and the images transferred to electronic format.
