Evolve like an artist

Eventually we all finish our studies and go back to the outer world to find our place there. Usually it means finding a job. However, what can happen there is that one might feel underestimated and limited to a tight company’s agenda.

Designers’ role has changed over time. From narrow disciplines and sub disciplines design elaborated to become an approach or even philosophy. Designer themselves can also act as a maker, translator or facilitator as well as work on different levels of a concrete-to-abstract axis.

Surprisingly, business also admits these changes and finds them very encouraging. Recent researches such as at McKinsey’s or at Danish Design Centre indicate the increasing value design adds to the product. Thus, companies are highly interested in finding a great specialist.

Nevertheless, there is a contradiction between what companies claim and how they act. They tend to hire a creative outside-of-the-box thinker and bound them with a tight brief, time limitations and budget. Organizations themselves do not make things easier: due to hierarchical structure, communication channels are often clogged and employers might find themselves on a meeting more often than at their work desks.

This is why in my thesis I tried to understand if there other ways for me as a designer to realize acquired knowledge.

Three main aspects of my research such as a Spiral theory by Clare Graves applied to organizational structures by Frederic Laloux, features of the upcoming Industry 4.0 and rethought relationships between an author and their auditory inspired by Amanda Palmer allowed me to assume how the next step of design, evolutionary or teal, might look like.

I propose to start with our key skill as designers which is problem finding, than narrow it down to a Minimal Viable Product and develop further relying on the auditory feedback. In such a scheme, designer and his loyal auditory merges all three roles of a typical project cell, which are client, manufacturer and customer. There is neither end-product nor end-user and the project is similar to organism, which can grow, change, merge or divide.

As an example of using these ideas in practice, I chose jewelry and come up with a kinetic pendant, which has two very different key positions and can shift from one to another whenever it is needed. It is fully printed on a 3d-printer and after I finalize the design to an algorithmically generated one it will be available for free download.
