Self-Soothers

In this project, I tried to create an ambiguous interactive installation based on the idea of unconscious body movements. I made 24 items in the form of pyramid, each mounted on rocking bases. The whole set activates when a visitor enters the room.

Statement - Concept

Body movements, postures and gestures reflect our history, our culture, and our current ways of being. When the words ‘body’ and ‘movement’ meet, we usually think of expressive acts like dancing. However, some may point to deeper issues when they happen on an unconscious level. They Can take us on a journey into the depths of the mind.

When a baby in an orphanage cries, nobody comforts them. As a result, they learn not to cry, instead they show self-soothing behaviors such as rocking and head banging to comfort themselves. These behaviors are learned due to neglect, limited social interaction, and a lack of loving caregivers who can consistently meet their needs. Some behaviors like body rocking may stay with a person through adulthood. In this project I tried to simulate rocking behavior with some mechanical interactive elements to show how the existence of some movements depends on the presence or absence of others.

When a visitor enters the room, the motion sensors are activated and the motors start working, hence the pyramids start to rock back and forth. It lasts about 8 seconds and then stops until the sensor detects another person passing by.

Aesthetics

SHAPE & COLOR:

Pyramid is one of the most stable volumes. Black color also helps to exaggerate the sense of stability and heaviness of the objects. As a result, visitor, in the first look, do not expect to face with rocking objects. Instability is the first surprising point that visitor discovers.

DIMENSION & NUMBERS:

there are 24 items in this collection. The dimensions of the each Item (2200mm height) is slightly taller than almost any human being with the aim of surrounding him/her. This feature enables the entire collection to be dominant enough to tell their story and enchant the audience.

Technical aspects and process

This project has three main parts in terms of structure. The base part, is made by wooden parts (in the shape of rocker).

the mechanical part, which cause the objects to move, includes electrical motors, motion sensors and some connecting means like Mosfets and wires.

The final part which builds the general appearance is made out of cardboards painted in black.
