For this intensive one week expertise session, we learned the basics of the 3D modelling softwares Blender and Unity. The end result was to create a VR environment of our own.
When we saw examples of the kind of environments we could create in VR, the ones that struck out to me the most were the projects that incorporated space or a dark sky. From the beginning I knew I wanted my project to incorporate that somehow.
I created an illustration in 2020 about data privacy that I felt could be incorporated well in virtual reality. I wanted to depict a bedroom that was missing its roof and in the night sky there were eyes blinking down at you. The eyes represented the data conglomerates that have access to our online information.
I wanted to keep the bedroom very bright and colorful almost like a scene from a cartoon show so that the contrast with the dark sky and the blinking eyes was very distinct. I also wanted this conceptual environment to be a showroom of sorts so I decided to put some of my own work on walls of the bedroom.
I had some trouble getting the look of the bedroom how I wanted it. We had a lot of space and on my first trial run I realized I had made the furniture too big however when I made changes I wasnt sure of how to fill the space.
I also had some trouble transferring data back and forth from the school's provided laptop and my own device.
But despite all the issues and the extreme learning curve, when I saw the end result on the last day, I felt proud of what I had created. In retrospect I can see where I fell short and what changes I would make now but still with all the limitations at hand, I felt very glad that I was able to partake in this expertise and bring an illustration to life in VR
