In this course, we analyzed examples of past utopias while considering the origins, focuses, actualization possibilities, and limitations. Through these analyses, I designed a utopia based on consumption.
My focus for the consumption field was the consumer culture which has captured our society deeply in this last decade. To change this culture and its effect on societal inequality and the depletion of environmental resources, I first investigated its zero-point emergence.
At the beginning of my research, the industrial revolution(industry 1.0) that led to mass production seemed like the consumer culture's trigger point, since we are consuming mass-produced goods in everyday life. Since industry 1.0 was only the trigger point, I created a table to examine each industry & web era to demonstrate consumer behavior within each one of them. My first method was to foresee the future trend of consumption in order to get ahead of the consumer culture with my utopian design. As I analyzed each era starting from industry 1.0 to the present day, I realized the fundament social behavior only transformed into different notions within that era's technological qualification, instead of changing.
To understand this fundament social behavior I examined the past of humankind as my second method. The outcome of this method is, the overall consumption of resources to generate profit was rooted back to the behavior of domination. This behavior is a result to ensure ownership which has countless examples going back from the capitalist economy to the ancient times within patriarchal societies.
Without a solid foundation every solution -no matter how throughout it is could be temporary or go in a different direction than it was intended initially. Therefore, before going into the future, I set a solid base for my utopia which is a matriarchal society.
In this utopia based on matriarchy, systems are economically and socially balanced, which enables these societies to respect the natural resources of the earth. As opposed to this patriarchal societies are built on notions of exploitation, conquer, war, greed, and inequality. With maternal values being at the center, this utopia was built on notions of a non-hierarchical society, co-habitation with surroundings, need-oriented and subsistence economy.
For the future of this utopia, I designed a wearable screen for the eye, partially for collective and partially for personal experiences. In order for these experiences to be collective, Dua-Lens will be applied to everyone in society, right after birth.
Through Dua-Lens our current perception of physical and digital realities will emerge into one inseparable duality. We will constantly be experiencing digital life without looking at our phone, computer, TV, or VR screens like we are now.
The aim of emerging realities is to minimize the harms of physical production and logistics of produced goods within one-type production system while digitally designing a visual identity for them. One-type production system is the physical stage of the standardized production line based on regions of the world. Through the digital stage of the basic products, human beings’ ultimate perception differs from look-a-like to multivarious-type products within duality. The product range involves packaged goods transportation, clothing, and building, while factors affecting the variety in the duality of these are form, material, and color.
