Embarking on the third project of the semester, our primary objective was to devise a connection mechanism that diverged from the conventional slit connection. Initially, we experimented with the popular slit connection, only to discern that it lacked the stability we sought given our unique circumstances.
In the initial stages of experimentation, the concept of a puzzle-like connection began to take shape. This innovative approach involved a connection that twisted into place, providing a more secure hold and preventing it from simply being pulled apart. However, an unforeseen challenge emerged – our prototype part was not compatible with the laser-cutter, necessitating a shift in our design strategy.
To address this, we decided to reconfigure our part to enable it to be connected with a second set of parts. These secondary components were specifically machined to fit snugly within the main part, thereby optimizing space and facilitating a more streamlined production process. This strategic adjustment not only resolved the machining compatibility issue but also opened up new possibilities for the overall design.
In our latest iteration, we took the bold step of increasing the scale of the puzzle-like parts. This decision not only enhanced the visual appeal of the connection but also contributed to its mechanical robustness. Additionally, we implemented minor adjustments to the overall stylistic look of the part, fine-tuning its aesthetic elements to align with our design vision.
As we continue to refine and develop our innovative puzzle connection, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the constraints of our project. This iterative process reflects our dedication to achieving both functionality and aesthetics, demonstrating the evolution of our design thinking throughout the semester.
