Cubie - Inclusive Game Design

Cubie Project endeavors to create a Compact Sensory Room for disabled children, blending the creativity of a pixel art block game with tactile elements and augmented reality.

Through personalized engagement, we aspire to foster personal independence, promote imaginative play, encourage socialization, and facilitate cognitive and motor skill development. This innovative design aims to empower disabled children, providing a multisensory and inclusive space that merges the physical and digital worlds.

How Does Cubie Work?

Cubie provides games tailored to children with special needs, accommodating their individual capacities. These games range from simple block-building activities without strict rules to more complex tasks like shaping objects on a digital canvas using role-playing elements. At the highest level, players can scan these shapes and engage with 3D models through a tablet interface.

Cubie Sensorial Room

The Cubie Sensorial Room project centers around innovative 30x30 cm cubes, designed as key elements for creating pixels. These cubes, available in sensory-friendly colors and tactile patterns, are visually appealing and enhance tactile stimulation, making them ideal for children’s sensory development. It fosters personal independence among children, helps them move physically while playing, and also releases stress.

Complementing these cubes, the room features adaptable shelving units that serve as storage and a canvas for pixel art creations. The system has modules that have been designed to fit any room shape and support the flexible and versatile nature of the Cubie Sensorial Room project. This setup ensures the room remains orderly while promoting imaginative and interactive play, merging functionality with creativity.

Cubie Cubes

The Cubie cubes combine MDF and mid-dense foam at their core, ensuring they are both sturdy and lightweight for safe child play. A layer of cushion sponge surrounds this core, providing a soft, tactile surface for comfort and safety.

Externally, the cubes are covered in nano-water resistant fabric, making them durable and easy to clean. Their edges are reinforced with a silicone frame, increasing resistance and friction for secure stacking and handling, essential for interactive play. These material choices ensure the cubes are engaging, robust, and child-friendly.

Inclusive colors determined by the website group were preferred as primary colors in the Cubie identity design. Secondary colors were determined as gray and brown, based on the concepts we determined. Cubie continues its identity that appeals to children, both in its logo and in its game cards and app design.

Cubie App& AR

In the final level of the Cubie game, children can scan the pixel images they’ve designed in the app. This allows them to access 3D versions of their creations in the Augmented Reality (AR) environment. They can interact with these images, experiencing both virtual and real environments simultaneously, and even take photos together. AR has been integrated into the game as a reward for completing activities. The application bridges the connection between AR and the sensory room.
