This project aims to redefine national identity using editorial design to embrace inclusivity and break away from traditional, narrow concepts tied to passports and legal status.
In the initial phase, the focus was on developing concepts, specifically centered around redefining passports and their design. After the first two days of exploration, I came up with three distinct concepts:
To delve deeper into these ideas, I used small moodboards and storytelling techniques to immerse myself in each setting. This approach helped me envision the surrounding world and how passports would fit into these unique scenarios.
After exploring several concepts, I chose to focus on „Stranded on Earth - Coexistence,“ inspired by the film District 9. This setting resonated with me the most, not only because I love the movie but also because it presented an interesting and unique scenario to explore. Enthusiastic about the potential, I decided to delve deeper into this idea.
To refine the concept, I reimagined the title as NO HUMANS ALLOWED! reflecting the complex interactions and tensions between species. This new angle allowed me to further develop the narrative and visual elements, guiding the design of the passports to suit this dystopian world.
After the sudden arrival on Earth and a fierce period of mistreatment of the »POLEEPKWA«, humanity has undergone a transformation, embracing coexistence with the alien species. The lack of id-systems that support the diverse needs of the »POLEEPKWA« interacting with human society leads to global challenges and the risk of further discrimination. The development of new passports tailored to the needs of the »POLEEPKWA« is essential. Integrating advanced biometrics, universal language translations and inclusive design to ensure seamless integration and mutual respect among all of Earth.
The Poleepkwa are extraterrestrial beings who arrived on Earth unexpectedly. Distinguished by their unique appearance, they have faced discrimination and challenges integrating into human society. Despite these difficulties, they possess advanced technology and a rich culture, highlighting the need for systems that support their coexistence with humans.
Poleepkwa-ID Passport Design
Key features:
Advanced Biometrics: Utilizing DNA structure and sequencing technology, these passports incorporate sophisticated biometrics to accurately identify individuals, ensuring secure and personalized identification.
Language Translation: Equipped with language translation capabilities, the passports can convert Poleepkwa language into human languages, facilitating communication and understanding between species.
Layered Datapage: The datapage is designed with a layered, transparent format, allowing for a dynamic and flexible presentation of information.
To enhance readability and reflect the futuristic and inclusive design
Inter - chosen for its clarity and legibility, Inter ensures that information is easily readable for ... well i guess humans :(.
Aux Mono - adds a sci-fi/tech character, aligning with the advanced and otherworldly theme of the passport.
OCR-B - used for the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ), OCR-B is a standard font that facilitates automated reading and processing of the passport information, ensuring compatibility with existing scanning systems.
Given the absence of official Poleepkwa images, I used Midjourney, to create a passport photo. While the generated images did not closely approximate the Poleepkwa as shown in the movie, they effectively conveyed the idea of another them, helping to illustrate the concept of interspecies coexistence in the passport design.
Additionally, I created landscapes using to depict the potential environment of the Poleepkwa. These landscapes were then incorporated into the passport design using Photoshop.
other graphic elements for the passport
In the context of my project, the Xenohelix is designed using a set of six unique genetic building blocks, or „Xenobuilds,“ to encode the genetic information of the Poleepkwa. These Xenobuilds are:
These Xenobuilds, akin to nucleotides in Earth’s DNA, form complex sequences to define the genetic traits of the Poleepkwa. In the passport design, the Xenohelix is represented through layered datapages, visually constructing the helix and enabling precise identification of the Poleepkwa.
Expertise Week is only 4 days long, plus an additional day for the presentation. I developed a rough structure for the passport and decided to design the following pages [pink].
The passport includes dedicated pages for the Xenogenomic Molecular Sequence (X-MS). The pages are layered and the chart can be scanned for identification purpose.
