EXP1 – Printing Porcelain

In this four-day expertise we were exploring the world of 3D-printing porcelain. We learned what to take into account while creating 3D objects for printing, how to prepair clay and setting up the files for the printing process.

Objekt 1 – Egg cup

Fot the first time printing, I decided on something small and simple – a geometrical egg cup. Surprisingly, the printing was without any issues and also way faster than I thought. I expected the printed clay to be way more fragile, so I learned I can try doing more advances shapes.

Objekt 2 – Flower pot

For my second approach I made a flower pot with a wavy shape for a friend. During the process, I forgot to take into account that clay shrinks about 10-20 % during the firing-process. So I am unsure if the pot will fit the flower, but at least the shape came out clean without major visual flaws.

Objekt 3 – Vase

For my last object I wanted to make something more spectacular. Inspired by the busts in the Georgium, I created a vase, which is vaguely representing a female body. During the printing process I was worried that the whole thing will collapse, considering its advanced shape. Luckily, the only part which slightly deformed was underneath the neck.

However, something strange happened during the printing. In the middle of the process, the printer left out some parts, resulting in an interesting outcome. The holes in the vase make it look like the female body is separated into two parts, like as it is wearing a top and a long skirt. Even though noone had an explanation for this, I am happy this accident happened, because it made this piece more unique.

Conclusion

These four days were a nice dive into porcelain-printing. To be honest, I was expecting way more fails than what really happened. In fact, all of my object came out quite well and I am happy with both my end results and that I now have some presents for friends and family.
