In this Project, we build and designed a dodecahedron. We faced the tasks of constructing a solid using Rhino and designing a coherent pattern.
first we build a dodecahedron by hand, to get a feeling how it works and where to put adhesive tabs. Then we constructed the solid in rhino with the help of the tutorial from https://materiability.com/portfolio/platonic-solids/ . Then we deconstructed the solid into one surface. We had determine what the folding edges and what the cutting edges are, so then we can put the adhesive tabs.
PATTERN
I decided to design my pattern inspired by the character of the dodecahedron, wich is edgy and balanced out / symmetric.
To make the pattern look balanced out as well, I wanted to put the edged triangles near the frame so it is working together with the pattern on the next surface. Two of the triangles are mirrored so I have a basic grid and can put small details distributed in the empty spots, so the amount of space is the same over the surface.
LASERCUTTING
Before producing the final product, I printed out a small version to test out how it works and where to put the Adhesive tabs. Then I did my first laser test, wich worked great, except one pattern that always slid to close to the border. After I understood that it was a problem in the constructing step, I changed it an lasered again, but then there was a problem with the layers of the edges. After a lot of editing edges it worked in the end.
PUTTING ALL TOGETHER
Then I had to glue it together, wish wasn´t easy because i had to hold all edges together at the same time. In the End I got a solid dodecahedron with some glue marks.
My dodecahedron represents a bold and edgy solid, highlighted by the color and pattern.
I´m really happy with the end result, even though if I would do the work again, I would do some stuff a little cleaner from the start, knowing now how to do so.
