Conversa Budd | Entwurfsmethodologie

During this Theory Course, we were presented with different future scenarios that ranged from probable to preposterous. We had to ensure that the correlating service we got made sense in the new future possibility we were appointed. Every two weeks, the world and service would be given to another group, and the possibility of these had to adapt a step further into the unlikely.

The four projects my group worked on looked like this:

Probable Future (Week 1 & 2) - Brainchips for Dogs

Plausible Future (Week 3 & 4) - Global Trade War x Translating Earbuds

Possible Future (Week 5 & 6) - Water Shortage x Lab Grown Meat

Preposterous Future (Week 7 & 8) - Chronic Heatwaves x Nano Bot Meds

The future scenario I chose for my final poster is The Global Trade War combined with translating earbuds.

-RESEARCH-

The first image shows the world-building process of our group in week 3.

Image 2 and 3 further develop the story and show the first service idea regarding the translating earbuds.

Image 4 depicts the character I created for the service blueprint.

The fifth image shows the initial service blueprint I built for the earbuds.

On the same day, we conducted interviews and noted the feedback we received. (Image 6)

After that, we (@Josie Marois and I) used that feedback to revise the service idea (Image 7), as well as the Service blueprint (Image 8), which @Kim Rechner then turned into a final design for week 4. (Image 9)

-PROCESS-

Moodboard

At first, I created a moodboard (Images 1-4).

During the search for reference images, I used these first four images and others to generate new scenes. Images 5 and 6 are examples from my work with Adobe Firefly.

As seen in the last image I then cut out features from the generated images and combined them into collages in Photoshop. These collages I then fed back into AI. I repeated this process until I had satisfactory-looking references. It is important to note, that the final reference images for the service visuals, that you can see below, were created with the free version of ChatGPT.

Drawing Process

After creating references I started illustrating the images in Procreate.

These are the different stages of my work process. The sketch took me two hours and the colouring work took another sixteen.

It was a challenge to create this layered style at a canvas size of DIN A1 due to Procreate limiting the document to a maximum of 22 layers.

(Side note: the screengrabs show layers names above 22 - Procreate keeps going up from the last highest number, even after merging existing layers)

Conclusion

I learned a lot of new things throughout the course. We worked with methods I hadn’t used before, for example Service Blueprints, Customer Journey Maps, and the idea arc. I was especially challenged by the interview part of the course, where we walked around campus and explained our service to strangers. Talking to people I don’t know stresses me out, so that really pushed me. It also felt a bit awkward to observe people during the first task of week one.

At the same time, I had a lot of fun during this course. I enjoyed creating dystopian future scenarios and making sure every little detail was accounted for. I especially liked the poster creation process and drawing the images.
