BioForge

During this semester in our Design Theory Course we were presented with different future technologies and scenarios ranging from probable to preposterous. We were asked to explore them and create different services that fit in our appointed future. Every two weeks we were given another world and service and the possibility of these had to become more unlikely.

The four projects my group worked on looked like this:

Probable future (Week one & two) - Brainchips for Dogs

Plausible future (Week three & four) - Global Trade War and Translating Earbuds

Possible future (Week five & six) - Water Shortage and Lab Grown Meat

Preposterous future (Week seven & eight) - Chronic Heatwaves and Nano Bot Meds

In the end I chose the Chronic Heatwaves and Nano Bot Meds for my final poster.

The future world

It's the year 3023. Due to the extreme effects of climate change, our world suffers from chronic heat waves. Eighty percent of the Earth's surface consists of deserts. Only the North and South Poles have some natural vegetation and rain cycles left. Humanity mostly lives underground in silos and subterranean cities. The ocean still exists, but it has noticeably shrunk in size, leading to the exploration of the Mariana Trench and the discovery of new deep-sea creatures adapted to extreme conditions. These creatures have evolved to survive the extreme heat and drought and now pose another challenge for life on the surface. When the collapse of the past society became imminent, seventy percent of the human population boarded space shuttles and left for colonies on other planets. There is still travel to and from space. People stay on Earth due to nostalgia, distrust of humanity's new „friends,“ and the cost of a ticket. During the search for suitable planets, humanity encountered intelligent alien life forms. On the surface, contact with them became friendly after initial conflicts. This stems from the realization that the aliens were superior in knowledge and technology. Although there is peace, some of the aliens have started to take over some of the subterranean cities after discovering humanity's plans to enslave them. A few of the alien species have also helped to improve Nano Bot technology. Governments, as well as the aliens, use the technology to control people and kill enemies, which is unknown to the public. Some of the subterranean cities are connected through tunnels under the surface. Most of the remaining population on Earth never see the surface until they either decide to leave this uninhabitable planet or decide to work jobs that force them to leave the underground. One of these jobs is that of mechanics and cleaners who maintain the solar cells that ensure the energy supply of the subterranean cities.

The future service

In this scenario, a BioForge provides injections with Nano Bots to ensure the health of millions of underground residents. The Nano Bots are designed to not only cool down the user's body temperature to prevent heat exhaustion but also improve the user's body functions. BioForge offers various types of injections for different needs. Some are used to fill nutrient and mineral gaps and enhance water and nutrient intake. Others are used to improve strength, vision, hearing, or healing properties. However, most are used to overcome the heat waves. The injections have different efficiencies. There are also special injection combinations with higher doses for different jobs, such as hunters who ensure the safety of mechanics and cleaners on the surface, who receive a combination of injections that improve not only heat resistance but also endurance, strength, and vision. Users with system-critical jobs also receive regular medical check-ups, and the injections are administered by a MedBot. When using an injection with high efficiency, the MedBot monitors the content of the remaining Nano Bots in the user's blood and uses a solvent to remove the rest before injecting new ones to avoid an overdose.

The final poster

The final poster depicts a dystopian future shaped by chronic heatwaves and the resulting service BioForge with its NanoBot Medication.

The top image shows one of the vendors selling the injections in an underground city. In the background, a glimpse of the underground city's architecture is visible, showcasing a dieselpunk-inspired aesthetic, while the BioForge service appears sleek and technologically advanced, as expected of a medical service.

The bottom left image depicts a part of the surface world, where a duster, a mechanic, and a hunter are on a mission to maintain the solar panels. The ruins of an old city can be seen in the background, slowly being overrun by sand, as well as one of the evolved deep-sea creatures that have adapted to the extreme conditions.

The bottom right image illustrates the Nano Bots traveling through the bloodstream to their final destination, where they will improve the user's health and body functions.

The accompanying text explains the world setting and the service of BioForge in this dystopian future, highlighting the desperate measures humanity has taken to survive in a world ravaged by climate change.
