Lichtung — Botanical Illustrations

In this Expertise week we experimented with different approaches to create botanical illustrations for graphic products.

A MEMORY

When I was a kid my grandmother used to pick mushrooms with us in the neaby forest. One day we came to a forest clearing (Lichtung) and there were hundreds of the most picturesque fly agarics (Fliegenpize). It was magical how some light could spark the growth of so many colorful fungi.

LETS BEGIN

This memory combined with some minimalist and stylized illustrations of fungi was my main inspiration.

After experimenting with watercolors and a somewhat more realistic approach to botanical Illustrations I decided to create a more abstract and hands on experience with making botanical elements.

I designed seven different illustrations that could be combined in several ways to create plants or scenes.

LINOCUT

I took my carving tools (that I had not used since primary school), cut myself in the finger and the parts out of the linoleum sheet.

The following stamps were created:

1. stem
2. leaf/bush
3. dandelion seed/small roots
4. flower/bush
5. mushroom top
6. small mushroom top/pistil of a flower
7. roots/tree

PATTERN SAMPLES

With fabric paint and fabric markers I created different pattern samples on fabric that could be used for a variety of projects. Especially to give old clothes (stains are perfect for stamps) a new life.

The patterns include:
Wildflower Field / Fly Agaric Glade / Deciduous Forest / Dancing Leaves / Little Mushrooms / Dandelions

in addition to patterns, it is of course also possible to create images. For example kitchen towels.. ;)

WILDFLOWER PRINT

I had a (lightly stained) old T-Shirt and stamped a scene of wildflowers on it. Continuing in this world, spreading the memory of a wonderful childhood.

Thanks to my grandma for this memory and Deepesh for modeling.
