Botanical illustration began as a way to better know and identify different plants, a way in which science and art came together to create beautiful and useful images, which not only helped medicine and agriculture advance but also allowed us to dream about distant lands, about expeditions and the discovery of new species, ultimately becoming part of our own material/visual culture.
Nowadays, illustration based on plants is not only used for scientific purposes. From fabrics to wallpapers, from posters to packaging, to animated films and video games, images of plants are present everywhere… even in the little sketches we do on our notebooks when we're bored or pensive.
This expertise module seeks to teach the fundamentals of botanical illustration, and how it can be applied to graphic products we use in our everyday lives, such as posters, packaging, fabric design, etc.
Students will practice with traditional techniques, such as watercolours, coloured pencils, markers, etc., and also with digital tools of their preference, to experiment and develop their style, and create some botanical illustrations which will then be applied to graphic products of their own choice.
For this course, some materials will be required:

The results will be shown in a short presentation. Both the process and the final results, as well as the presentation, will be evaluated.
