At the beginning in class we decided to work in a group based on the themes: Food and memory. Starting from that, I did a brainstorm where I connected various aspects of my culture, Peruvian traditions and memories of my life, grouping them into 3 possible ideas to develop the illustration.
One of the most important religious events in Peru is the Señor de los Milagros procession in Lima. This is a religious procession that takes place every October and attracts thousands of people from all over the country. The procession is in honor of a mural of Jesus Christ that miraculously survived a massive earthquake in 1655. The mural is carried through the streets of Lima, while participants dress in purple and white robes to symbolize the image of Christ. The Señor de los Milagros is an important part of Peruvian culture and tradition.
Starting from the idea of religiosity in Peru, I wanted to place Peruvian sweets as divinities where the „Turron“ is the main star and its saints the other desserts that can be enjoyed during that festivity. All these elements in a kind of altar together with flowers, ornamentation among other icons that are part of this popular religious event.
Perú is one of the richest countries in traditions and cultural manifestations due to religion.
In Lima, every year during October we celebrate “The purple month”, where peruvians gather in the biggest procession in the country honoring the city’s patron: El Señor de los Milagros.
This is an opportunity to have a taste of our traditional desserts such as turrón, suspiro limeño, picarones and more.
