Day 1 | 24th of October

Introducing our selfs.jpg
Introducing our selfs.jpgIntroducing our selfs.jpg

After we adapted the room to our idea of a creative workspace on Monday morning, we viewed the material Michael Sarbacher had brought with us. The material included newspapers, magazines and books as well as various card games. Then everyone decided to choose a book / magazine etc. of their choice.

We first introduced ourselves to each other, then presented the material we preferred and received various input from Michael Sarbacher. In the following task, each of us introduced ourselves a little more personally. For this we used posters and post-its to represent ourselves visually. We highlighted our strengths, the way we see ourselves and how we as individuals can contribute to this course.

At the beginning of the day, Michael Sarbacher gave us yoyos in our hands: First, everyone increased their own level in three levels defined by themselves; then mini-performances were rehearsed in small groups and presented to the large group afterwards. Reflection and togetherness were in the foreground, which is why a tangled yoyo led to new insights.

In the afternoon, with sunshine and good weather, we went for a walk in nature looking for change and transformation. We brought our photos to the course and presented our impressions and results to each other.

We then visualized our expectations and ideas for the expertise week in small teams. For this we drew at the same time on the same sheet of paper and thus supplemented and completed our ideas and thoughts at the same time.

Day 3 | 26th of October

Design Ethics.jpgDesign Ethics.jpg

Things got hot: One of Michael Sarbacher's presentations allowed us to reveal our point of view as designers and use the double diamond to explain what we consider important, which no-go's there are and how we identify a good presentation.

We also talked about our personal ethics when it comes to design. What limits do we set ourselves and what limits does design have in general?

The last task was to find out why we are creative and what the difference is between creativity and design. A discussion ensued, which we continued the following day.

Day 4 | 27th of October

We started this day by closing the discussion from the previous day. Afterwards, Michael Sarbacher gave us a deeper insight into the world of business management consultancy. For this he presented us with a systematic implementation of a company for digital improvement. The company's name is Daman Health / eDaman and it was founded in the United Arab Emirates. An important input for us designers, so that we can understand a real project implementation process from the point of view of a management consultant.

After the presentation, the model of role distribution in a team according to Belbin was briefly presented to us. A distinction was made between 9 roles, which were divided into function and property. It took quite a while before we were really sure about the roles we see ourselves in. Then everyone presented and discussed their chosen role. To top off this task, Michael Sarbacher distributed roles he had thought up to everyone for us, because he had been able to watch, experience and better assess us for a few days.

After everyone was aware of their role, we were to take a walk and meanwhile think about the final presentation. How do we present our course? What is the structure at Incom? Who will do which step of the work? We spent the last half hour of the day preparing the posters of each day of the week.

Day 5 | 28th of October

The Designers Approach.jpgThe Designers Approach.jpg

On the final day, everything was coming together.

Based on all the insights we had gained beforehand, we formulated methods and approaches for how we, as designers, accompany a process of change.

It turned out quite quickly that we as designers determine results and contexts through the process. The path is the goal and we as designers accompany this process. We as designers help with a variety of tools to show possible ways in the process. Through the tools, all participants should become aware of the scope of their creation and internalize their influence and responsibility.

I'd like to thank the head of Expertise I Michael Sarbacher for such unusual experience! We were talking about the role of design in the world of business. I understood that these spheres have much in common and our lessons proved that design is more about business, customers, crafts than about art. However, unfortunately during my bachelor degree we often don't pay much attention to these thoughts which are, in my opinion, fundamental in the design world. Michael also taught us how to look at different situations at an „unexpected“ angle and notice details.

Most of all I liked the beginning and the end of the working days with „check-in“ and „check-out“. It is very important to fix aims and results. After the end of the expertise week I have been trying to use this method in my educational process and daily life!

During this week, not only I've discovered the reel meaning of change and transformation, but also I had the chance to know more about myself and improve my self-confidence. I have encountered different experiences, which taught me many things, and I am thankful for all of the opportunities given to me during this week.

My most significant learning from the class was identifying my personal strengths as a designer, and the qualities I bring to the table in a group setting.  The main questions raised during this expertise were :

1. How can I change a designer's role in an organization from 'making things beautiful' to being actively involved in innovation?

2. Where do design and business intersect?

Walk in the Park was an exercise to break out of the traditional classroom setting. I found it a very enlightening experience to observe changes in the natural environment, metaphorically, through sunlight and plants.

Eine Prise Pfeffer, eine Chilischote und eine Messerspitze voll Zucker. Und dann über Excitement und Vorfreude bis hin zu Mut. Und dann war ich auf dem Titelbild ganz oben. Wie das passieren konnte? Lies mal rein!

What was the highlight of the week for me? What could I learn? How do I work as a designer/filmmaker? How does my way of working differ from the way people in the business world work?

Questions, which I answered and gave examples in the following. It was still a very interesting week for me. Could I take away a lot of knowledge for myself? Oh yes! Have a look yourself and read my PDF.

Below you can find a small picture gallery, which were taken on the second day of the expertise. The task was to find examples outside in which a change or a transformation can be recognized. A very interesting task, because I have to say that before I rather unconsciously paid attention to changes. Through this task my focus was changed. It is also not only about the changes, which can be seen in the pictures - no. This perspective is transferred to areas, systems, structures and methods. A task that at first only scratches the surface, but in the next step is much more in-depth.
