This Elective Module „Botanical Exploration for design projects“ helped us understand and learn to observe plants in particular and encouraged us to experiment with different medias. Tarot has become popular worldwide and is used by many as a tool for personal growth, self-understanding, and spiritual exploration. Different decks have unique artwork and interpretations, allowing users to find one that resonates with them.
Tarot was initially used for playing a game called Tarocchi. Over time, tarot cards became associated with divination and spiritual guidance. It is often used for fortune-telling or predicting future events, to gain insight into their thoughts, feelings, and current situations or to seek advice and spiritual guidance through tarot readings.
It consists of 78 Cards. The Major Arcana (represent significant life events, spiritual lessons, and major archetypes) and the Minor Arcana (deal with everyday events and situations).
Tarot cards are traditionally divided into three main categories that differ in their origins, symbolism, and usage. These categories are the Rider-Waite Tarot, the Marseille Tarot, and the Thoth Tarot. Here are the key differences:
A tarot reading involves shuffling the deck and drawing cards in a specific layout or „spread.“ The reader interprets the cards' meanings and their positions in the spread to provide insights or answers to questions.
Each card in a tarot deck has rich symbolism, often drawing from various mythologies, religions, and esoteric traditions. The imagery is designed to tap into the subconscious mind and evoke intuitive responses.
Flowers have long been imbued with symbolic meanings, a tradition known as „floriography.“ This practice dates back to ancient cultures but became particularly popular during the Victorian era when flowers were used to convey messages that words could not. Each flower carries its own unique symbolism, derived from mythology, folklore, and cultural traditions, allowing them to communicate emotions, virtues, and sentiments without uttering a single word.
In the guidebook, the symbolism of each card and flower is explained, so that the reader can learn about the meaning of the flowers depicted.
Since I chose the method of linoprinting, the time of one semester wasn´t enough to produce a whole set of tarot cards. I had to cut and paint the cards, sketch all the flowers, frames and backsides, cut the plates, print them and write the cards name by hand, with ink and pen.
I cutted and printed six flowers, the golden frames and the backside of the cards. But the following cards of the Major Arcana are already planned out and in the making.
These are the sketches of the next cards, which I sketched out digitally, to make it clearer, what the endresult might look like.
Here are examples of my designs in usage.
I thought about merch, which might be useful and interesting for modern witches with a fable for design and handcraft. So i developed a wooden box with a handcarved front, that matches the vibe of the handcarved linoprint cards. This box might contain a bag for your crystals, the guidebook for tarotreading, a silk for your altar and other magical items.
