MOTIONFLOW

MOTIONFLOW is a cross-device digital application that discreetly integrates short movement breaks into the working day. The starting point is the widespread problem of prolonged sitting, which contributes to devastating health risks. MotionFlow uses usage and activity patterns to recognize when a short burst of activity would be beneficial and suggests 30-second micro-exercises that can be performed while seated and without equipment.

A minimalist widget with a filling circle visualizes time intervals and displays a microexercise. The goal is not to improve performance, but to maintain physical health in the long term through regular, unobtrusive movement in the work context.

Problem

One third of the global population does not move enough. Especially in office environments, movement is neglected under pressure and constant deadlines. The consequences range from back pain and general discomfort to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Physical inactivity accounts for approximately 7.2% of deaths worldwide, making it one of the leading preventable health risk factors.

Implementation

The project began with an extensive research phase exploring various possible approaches. Through feedback, it became clear that an intermedial software-based solution would create the most impact. Further research and expert consultation helped refine the concept. After a phase of stylistic exploration, I chose live-action filming to achieve authenticity and adaptability. Six example exercises were filmed in a studio setting. The user interface was then designed in Illustrator and animated in After Effects. Finally, a product film was created to clearly communicate the functionality and integration of the application.

Research

An interview with a sports scientist revealed that exercising after work alone is not sufficient to compensate for the negative effects of prolonged sitting. What truly matters is activating the body regularly throughout the day through short micro-exercises. The core issue is not a lack of knowledge, but a lack of reminder within the work routine.

Solution

The solution is an application that subtly integrates movement into everyday work life. At intervals of 30 to 60 minutes, it provides a visual reminder to briefly activate the body. The exercises last only 30 seconds, can be performed while sitting, and require no significant change in daily habits.

Design Approach

The visual language follows a calm and transparent aesthetic. Waves and circles represent time, breathing, and rhythm, creating a conscious connection to movement. The interface is reduced to its essentials and uses the corporate colors blue, black, and white to convey clarity and medical credibility. In the picture, you can see the sketches of the widget.

Product Concept

MotionFlow is a cross-device application featuring a passive widget that announces upcoming exercises through a visual time metaphor. The short, quiet movements can be easily imitated at the workplace without interrupting workflow. It is deliberately not a fitness tool, but a subtle form of preventive health care integrated into the working environment.
