Exploring Dessau

This project explores how sound can change the way people experience a place. I designed an audio walk that guides visitors through the space using narration, ambient recordings, and moments of reflection. Instead of presenting information like a traditional tour, the audio encourages listeners to slow down, observe their surroundings, and connect with the location through storytelling and sound.

Process

The production started with planning the route and writing the narration for each stop of the audio walk. Once the script was finalized, we recorded the voice-over in one of the school's recording spaces using a microphone to ensure clear audio quality. We recorded multiple takes for each section so we could choose the best performances during editing.

After recording, all of the audio files were imported into the editing software. We selected the strongest takes, adjusted the pacing, and balanced the volume to create a smooth listening experience. Transitions between each stop were refined so the narration flowed naturally, and any unnecessary pauses or mistakes were cut.

Throughout the editing process, we listened to the audio several times to identify areas that could be improved. Small adjustments to timing and clarity helped make the final audio walk more engaging and easier to follow. The finished piece provides a clear and immersive experience that guides listeners through the location while maintaining consistent audio quality.

Results & Learning Experience

This project demonstrated how important planning, recording quality, and editing are in creating an effective audio experience. Recording in a controlled environment at school resulted in clear voice recordings, while the editing process helped improve the overall flow and clarity of the narration.

Working on the audio walk also highlighted the importance of pacing. Small changes, such as adjusting pauses or removing unnecessary sections, made the narration easier to follow and more engaging for listeners.

Throughout the project, I developed practical skills in audio recording, voice editing, and post-production. I also gained a better understanding of how sound can influence the way people experience and interpret a physical space. Overall, the project showed that thoughtful audio design can create an immersive experience without relying on visual elements.

Contributions

This project strengthened my understanding of the complete workflow behind creating an audio walk, from recording and editing to presenting the final experience online. I recorded the narration at school, edited the audio to improve its clarity and pacing, and helped refine the overall listening experience.

In addition to the audio production, I designed and developed the project website, which serves as the main platform for accessing the audio walk. Building the website allowed me to combine design and technical skills, ensuring the content was easy to navigate and accessible across different devices.

Through this project, I gained practical experience in audio recording, post-production, and web development. I also learned how thoughtful sound design, clear storytelling, and a well-designed digital interface work together to create an engaging and immersive experience for users.
