This Expertise introduces soft robotics as a sub-branch of robotics, which aims to use flexible, compliant materials as actuators for movement, locomotion and behaviors. We will explore how to plan a three-dimensional inflatable structure - a soft robot - in a two-dimensional setting and fabricate it with different manufacturing technologies. Here we will learn how to use air pressure to „program“ flat material into objects that can move, perform tasks, and behave controllably.
To get an overview of soft robotics, we will look at historical examples, current research, and the theoretical background of pneumatic structures and their unique role and quality in industry, space travel, and architectural context.
Based on vector-editing software (Rhino, Illustrator, or similar) and with the help of CNC-controlled machines, we will focus on creating our own air-controlled structures and robots.
