“The report needs to become more visual,” writes the New York Times as point one in its 2020 strategy paper. Visual experts will play a key role in shaping the future of digital communication and will be increasingly in demand. Print is no longer the central medium, but it is redefining itself in exciting ways: the trend is towards higher-quality print products, and readers are developing higher expectations for both content and form. However, web, app, and especially mobile formats will define the future. Experts in visual storytelling and the intersection of text, design, and web development are increasingly sought after.
Overview of course content:
- Image Research: How and where can I find compelling photography? What criteria should I use to select the image material I find?
- Visual Storytelling: How do I tell stories through images?
- Digital Publication Formats: What publication and storytelling formats exist? How do you develop individualized visual concepts?
In our workshop, we will place a strong focus on different publication channels and work with exciting visual material through many practical exercises. For example, a single image from a photographic work can illustrate a newspaper article. However, the same work could appear as a longform feature in a magazine with 10-12 images, or online with an extended series of 25 images. A central question in the workshop will be: how do I optimize image selection for different storytelling formats and publication channels?
Participants will gain a solid understanding of the challenges in image research, sourcing, and developing individualized visual concepts for print, web, and mobile. Throughout the week, we will work with both analog and digital image material, and participants will intensively train their ability to see and evaluate photography through discussion and exchange with others.
In addition to brief theoretical sections introducing key topics, most of the time will be spent on specific tasks, which will be completed individually or in teams and then discussed. Whether for print or online, building a story is best developed in an analog way, which means we will also work extensively with printed images, paper, pens, and scissors.
The technical aspects—such as image editing and file formats—will only be touched upon briefly in the workshop.
