This class offers an introduction to scientific publishing for designers. It is targeting at students who have a general interest in design research and who tinker with the idea of publishing their work within the design research community.

Contents of the class:

• What is a scientific paper? different types of scientific papers
• Best practice: analysis of some examples of scientific papers from the design field
• Finding your topic, evaluating existing material
• Formulating a research question
• Identifying the right research methods
• The role of literature, how to do a (systematic) literature review
• Referencing tools (e.g. Zotero)
• Where to publish? (design conferences, journals)
• Writing an abstract
• Peer-review (feedback among classmates)
• Reviews from invited experts
• Submitting an abstract to a conference call
• Writing the outline of your paper*
• Designing your research (but not actually doing it*)

* Those who actually want to write a full paper and submit somewhere, are welcome to do so and will be appropriately supported (but this is not required as part of the class).

Class is scheduled Wednesdays at 14.30 (we might alternate between weekly and bi-weekly cycles with 2 or 4 hours, respectively).
