Storytelling with Science Fiction.

This Elective Module is positioned within 2d and 3d. We will explore the potentials of storytelling in the design discipline. Based on short stories by renowned science fiction authors, such as Stanislav Lem, Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Iain M. Banks, and Bruce Sterling, you are going to investigate the dynamics of storytelling. You will read and analyze a particular short story, visualize its story arc, and then design an intervention (an artefact* that was not present in the original story), which leads to an alternative ending of the story.

Why are we doing this?

• Get to know highly acclaimed science fiction writers
• Learn how science fiction can provide a foundation for future design solutions
• Train your fantasy, your imagination, and your creative muscles
• Understand that design needs storytelling, and that creation means to come up with something that didn’t exist before
• Develop a unique visual world and props that might open up your entry into the filmmaking industry

Deliverables:

• Visual story as a graphical timeline (Poster), including sketches of main characters
• Artefact (*can be a product, a service, a digital tool, a plant, a machine, a piece of clothes, but not a living being); delivery either digitally rendered, as an analog model within the given possibilities, or as a 3d Illustration
• Written synopsis of original and modified story
• Appropriate Presentation (t.b.d.)

Class will take place Thursdays from 14:30 to 18:00.
