Object #7 - TEASER

Object #7 explores how perspective, light, camera work, and framing can transform an ordinary object into something atmospheric and meaningful. Through storyboards, tests, and visual experiments, the project developed a clearer understanding of how small cinematic decisions shape perception, tension, and emotion in the final film.

STARTING POINT

The starting point for the project was the decision to work with a minimal cinematic setup. From the beginning, the aim was to create a short film that would rely on atmosphere rather than dialogue, action, or plot. This made it possible to focus on visual expression, technical experimentation, and the emotional effect of the moving image.

The project developed from the question of how lighting, camera movement, and post-production could transform a simple object into something visually compelling. Instead of beginning with a complex story, the concept grew from the desire to investigate perception itself. The work gradually evolved into an exploration of how small formal decisions can completely change the viewer’s emotional response.

PROJECT IDEA

The core idea of Object #7 was to change the viewer’s perception of an ordinary object through visual composition, lighting, and sound. The film is built around the idea that a familiar object can become cinematic when it is isolated from its usual context and placed into an unfamiliar environment.

A central part of the concept was to leave enough space for ambiguity. Rather than explaining what the object is supposed to mean, the film allows the audience to project their own associations onto it. This approach creates openness and tension at the same time. The object is not presented as a symbol with one fixed meaning, but as something whose significance is shaped by mood, movement, and perspective.

PERSPECTIVES & WAYS OF SEEING

The project examines how different perspectives influence the way an object is perceived. By adjusting the camera position, movement, distance, and framing, the same object can appear calm, distant, threatening, or strangely important. This shift in perspective is one of the central narrative tools of the film.

In addition to camera perspective, the film also works with the idea of mediated vision. The object is not shown in a neutral way, but through a constructed cinematic gaze shaped by lighting, post-production, and sound design. These elements do not simply document the object; they actively interpret it. The result is a viewing experience in which the technical process becomes part of the meaning.

The project also explores the idea of environment as a perspective. The surrounding space, the quality of light, the visual texture, and the sound layer all influence how the object is read. In this sense, the film is not only about the object itself, but about the conditions under which something becomes visible and emotionally charged.

CONCEPTUAL INSPIRATION

The visual direction of the project was influenced by minimalistic and clean aesthetics, as well as by mysterious and atmospheric environments. A cinematic camera language was important from the beginning, because the goal was to create tension without relying on dramatic action. The object needed to feel significant through form, rhythm, and presentation alone.

The idea that an ordinary object can become emotionally meaningful through context was especially important. This principle shaped the entire project: rather than emphasizing complexity, the film uses restraint to create interest. The less the object explains itself, the more the audience is encouraged to interpret it.

I created the storyboard together with a few test renderings in order to visualize the story in my mind more clearly and develop a better sense of how the scenes would work visually.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

The production process was built around Blender as the main tool for modeling, scene setup, materials, lighting, camera animation, and rendering. These steps formed the foundation of the film’s visual language. Because the project depended heavily on atmosphere, each production stage had a direct effect on the final mood.

Lighting played a particularly important role throughout the process. Different setups were tested in order to find a balance between clarity and ambiguity. The goal was not simply to illuminate the object, but to shape its presence and suggest a specific emotional tone. Camera movement was also carefully designed to feel deliberate and cinematic rather than mechanical.

After rendering, the material was further developed in After Effects. Here, overlay effects, film grain, noise, color adjustments, and compositing were used to strengthen the visual texture. Sound design was also integrated at this stage, helping to align the pacing of the image with the emotional rhythm of the film. In the final version, post-production became not just a finishing step, but a central part of the film’s identity.

PROCESS MATERIAL

A large part of the project development consisted of practical tests and visual experiments. Lighting tests helped explore how different sources, intensities, and shadow qualities affected the object’s appearance. These tests were essential for deciding how much information should be visible and how much should remain hidden.

Composition tests were equally important. They made it possible to compare different framings and to understand how placement within the frame changes perception. Camera movement experiments were used to study pace, flow, and tension. Some movements felt too fast or too direct, while others created a stronger sense of control and atmosphere.

Rendering settings were also tested repeatedly to achieve the desired balance between technical quality and visual style. In addition, sound experiments helped define the relationship between image and audio. These early studies were useful not only for the final outcome, but also for showing how the project developed over time.

CHALLENGES

One of the main challenges was creating convincing lighting in a way that supported both realism and atmosphere. Because the project was based on a minimal setup, every lighting decision had a visible impact on the final image. Small changes in brightness, contrast, or shadow placement could completely alter the emotional effect.

Another challenge was making the camera movement feel natural and controlled. The movement needed to support the cinematic quality of the film without becoming too obvious or distracting. Finding the right rhythm between motion and stillness took several rounds of adjustment.

Sound integration was also demanding. The audio had to work together with the image without overpowering it or making the film feel overly constructed. Deciding which post-production effects were effective and which ones became too distracting was another important part of the process. These difficulties were useful, however, because they helped define the final visual and sonic language more precisely.

REFLECTION

The project changed significantly between the first idea and the final result. At the beginning, the focus was mainly on creating a cinematic perspective study. Over time, the film became more atmospheric and restrained, with stronger emphasis on ambiguity, rhythm, and visual precision.

The most meaningful change came through lighting and post-production. Lighting evolved several times during the process, and the final atmosphere only emerged after multiple tests. Also post-productio had a strong impact. Elements such as film grain, overlay effects, and sound design changed the meaning of the film and made the object feel more emotionally present.

What worked especially well was the combination of Blender and After Effects. Together, they allowed the project to move from a technical 3D setup into a more expressive cinematic piece. The overall atmosphere, along with the slower camera timing and visual minimalism, gave the project a clear identity.

What was difficult was keeping the project precise without making it overly complicated. The challenge was to remove unnecessary elements while still keeping the film interesting. This process led to an important insight: sometimes the strongest result comes from reducing rather than adding.

One of the most important things learned during the project was that post-production is not just a finishing layer. It actively shapes meaning, pacing, and emotional response. Small details such as visual texture, sound rhythm, and timing can significantly change how an audience experiences a film. This is probably the most useful takeaway for future projects as well.

EARLY EXERCISES

In the first weeks of the semester, we worked on a series of short exercises that introduced the basic principles of visual storytelling.

Day in a Life

The first tasks was to create a Day in a Life film, showing a day in the life of a person or everyday character in less than 60 seconds. This exercise focused on editing, rhythm, and compression, and helped us think about what is essential in a short sequence and what can be removed without losing its meaning.

Light and Perspectives

Another exercise explored the relationship between light and perspective. We created two versions of the same simple scene, changing only the lighting and the camera angle to produce a clearly different emotional effect. This made it clear how strongly meaning can be shaped by film language, even when the situation itself stays exactly the same.

Storyboard Opening Scene

We also developed storyboards for an opening scene of a film. This exercise was less about drawing and more about clear visual communication. It helped translate an idea into a structured sequence and showed how storyboarding can be used as a practical tool for cinematic planning before production begins.
