A practical workshop on the fundamentals of cinematography in daylight
(This text is in English to accommodate international guest students.)
This short project focuses on the basics of cinematic image creation: lighting, exposure, lenses, camera operation, and the art of creating strong visuals with simple means.
The workshop is open to all skill levels and welcomes international guests. Whether you are new to working with cameras, light, and editing or looking to deepen your skills, this course offers hands-on experience and creative exploration.
Our primary focus is on natural light, complemented by simple LED solutions for artificial lighting. We aim to work at least 50 percent outdoors – whether in the Elbe Park in Dessau or around the Bauhaus campus – making use of the bright days of spring as a dynamic source of light and atmosphere. We will also embrace changing weather conditions as part of the creative process, learning how to adapt and work with different lighting situations.
At the beginning of the workshop, we will discuss whether to focus on people, landscapes, or architecture as our primary visual subjects. This collective decision will guide our practical exercises and creative approach throughout the course.
In addition, we will explore how to use AI tools to streamline workflows, speed up processes, and make life easier when dealing with repetitive or time-consuming tasks, particularly in the areas of editing and organization.
Participants will work in teams, regularly switching roles and technical tasks to gain diverse perspectives and practical experience. Simple exercises, short scenes, and creative miniatures will provide opportunities for experimentation and learning.
